                                        Gluten in beer

                                        Just one such example has been our ability to detect gluten in beer – which has played a key role in the development of the Brewers Clarex??brewing enzyme. Not only does it enable the production of gluten-free beer, it reduces the carbon footprint of beer production by up to 8%. In fact, if all the brewers in the world used this product it would reduce carbon emissions by the equivalent of 150,000 trips around the world.

                                        Analytical Sciences are applied throughout DSM - from refining polymers for the automotive industry, to developing vitamins and enzymes for food. This connected approach enables us to cross-pollinate and explore how the value of one specific analytical technology in a particular application area can be used to develop products and processes in completely different fields.

                                        What does all this mean in practice??Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is just one technique developed through Analytical Sciences; specifically a more precise method for identifying gluten in beer – which in turn is enabling us to help the brewing industry deliver a more sustainable beer.

                                        Another is the development of synthetic chains for the cargo industry made with our Dyneema? fiber - an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) that is a lighter and more sustainable product.

                                        DSM has key analytical RT&D centers for Nutrition in Columbia, MD (U.S.), Dartmouth (Canada), Kaiseraugst (Switzerland), and Shanghai (China). Those focused on Materials are in Geleen, Waalwijk and Zwolle (the Netherlands), and our Biotechnology analytical RT&D center in Delft (the Netherlands).
